Reason for Existence, ISBN: 9780964392663, Windstream Publishing, is an intriguing and unusual sci-fi in e-book form by Richard Botelho. The author’s acknowledgements end with the quote from 1 Corinthians 16:14 “Let all that you do be done in love.” From this unusual quote the author begins an enthralling tale where the world as we know it is descending into annihilative conflict and the statement’s significance becomes fully apparent only in the final stages.
The story’s protagonist is David Jordan, a brilliant economist founder of the billions-earning Global Investment Group and proponent of an ancillary institute based on the unusual premise of “Human Harmony through Singularity” where individuals “think as one”. With the world on the brink of total demise, he receives a call from his old college friend Nicholas Strada. Nick, of a celebrated Greek family and now Secretary General of the United Nations wants his help because he ‘thinks outside the box’, a quality needed because none of his staff can provide any plausible suggestions to stop the world conflict. From this moment the story begins to wend its way through an intriguing tale that is another in the increasing number of novels centered on the discordant world situation that seems to be heading toward chaos and ultimate total destruction. It is a unique approach in which provision of even a few more details this reviewer believes would deprive the prospective reader from discovering the gradual evolution of the story to a final understanding of relevance of the opening quotation.
Discussion: In this reviewer’s opinion, the author has provided one of the more captivating stories about the world’s chaotic condition available to date. According to today’s daily news releases it beautifully describes the growing attitude of the masses toward the manner in which our leaders have moved. “The elite continue to pursue self-interest to ruination of human society leadership and has forsaken the people who give them their power.” And again: “The Old Roman Game – give citizenry ample food and sufficient entertainment and you can rule them without magnanimity.” Furthermore he has combined an interesting sci-fi thriller not only with space ships, plausible galaxies and intergalactic habitation with believable characterization, but additionally interesting amounts of spirituality, philosophy, and a most provoking thought of the position of love in human existence. Amusingly and completely irrelevant is my personal disagreement with the author's statement about the beauty of Buenos Aries: "her velvety embrace obsessing any man. If a city can be a beautiful woman, that city is Buenos Aries." (I recently had occasion to again visit and regrettably cannot agree. - Again, completely irrelevant but the ONLY fault I found with the entire book!)
Conclusion: A quite captivating read that this reviewer believes to be one that unfolds more enjoyably if details are gradually learned only as they unfold.

Reason for Existence was a great surprise!
I will try to not reveal a lot of the plot and give spoilers in this review because it is SO good! Reason for existence tells the story of David, who is trying to keep the world from starting World War Three and trashing the earth with nuclear weapons. Grosso modo, this is what Reason for Existence is about, but in reality it is so much more than that.
Overall, this book is really well flowing and easy to read, and at the same time it is really deep and raises questions not just about the story but to yourself about reality. Achieving this blend is comething not a lot of authors are able to do. I'm glad I got to read Reason for Existence, 100% recommended.
As the world quickly descends into madness, David Jordan is called upon by an old friend to help stop the madness. Can this mild mannered extraterrestrial human keep this world from destroying itself? Will he finally be able to report on the one thing that others in the galaxy can't? This book is awesome!! It will stay with you long after you read it. The characters are well written and the story will have you right up to the end. I would highly recommend this book as a must read!! I received a complementary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is an interesting mashup of sci-fi, mystery, political thriller and romance, which was unexpected and kept me reading.
The main character, David, moves through a series of connected interviews with various influential humans who seem to have developed more fully and are leaning toward humanity’s eventual development of a fourth lobe of the brain which will leads to more rational thinking and behavior. David finds that each person he talks to completes a small piece of the puzzle, but they all seem to be leading him to Miami.
While David and his benevolent brethren work to save earth and humanity, the Illick, another extraterrestrial race, are working just as hard to make sure the human race exterminates itself.
Though the main character and his cohorts are on earth to monitor and influence earthlings, it seems that living on earth has more influence over them than they planned. Some of them embrace this and others can’t wait to get away from it.
Possibly because the aliens were supposed to be removed from emotion, I found the conclusion of the book extremely moving when David learns he has emotions and just how painful they can be.
While there were some slow points and a few rough spots, this is not your typical sci-fi book and it is definitely worth reading.
