Exit Strategy Kelley Armstrong Books

I will caution those who seek out Exit Strategy- this may not be what you are expecting from a book about an assassin. However, I still liked it regardless. Is it nonstop action, chases, and adventure? No, it is not. What it does have is a complex main character, Nadia Stafford (or Dee, as her hitwoman name).

Nadia is a 33 year old ex-cop who comes from a family background in law enforcement. She is "recommended" for early retirement after a case hits too close to a traumatic loss from her past, and she snaps. Soon after, a she finds a new calling when a man named Jack (mid to upper forties) finds her and introduces her to the life of being a hired killer.

Exit Strategy centers around Jack inviting Nadia to join in the hunt and hit of a serial killer called the Helter Skelter Killer. It comes to light that the killer just might be an a retired hitman- which shines a spotlight on those in their business.

Along the way, Nadia meets Jack's mentor and fellow hitmen as they try to identify and track down the HSK.

Throughout the book it seems to come up that there are different types of hitmen, which I found interesting because it makes the characters, and the readers, think about how one could still keep their morality while acting as a hired killer. For me, Nadia was a realistic character- she is someone who has had a lifetime relationship with the ideas of justice, and struggles to keep up a boundary between the parts of her that have a catharsis when she delivers justice, and the parts that make the excuse that she is only taking on jobs to fund her legitimate business.

I found myself curious to see what kind of person Nadia would continue to be, and how she would keep working through her past trauma and the choices she has made as a result. Other characters such as Jack and Quinn (a hitman whose nickname is "The Boy Scout") were great support for Nadia and I loved learning bits and pieces about them as they interacted with her.

I would recommend giving Exit Strategy a try- it might not be what you expect, but that does not have to be a bad thing.

Exit Strategy Kelley Armstrong Books Reviews

Ever since a quiet away from home Thanksgiving with family when I didn't bring enough books Kelley Armstrong has been my go to Author for Romance, Supernatural and Horror in just the right amounts. So When I found out she was writing about (gasp!) normal people- who didn't turn into wolves or cast spells or live in hell dimensions or anything- I was shocked. So shocked I didn't even bother trying the book out.

Well, I eventually managed to come around to rectifying my error. "Exit Strategy" is about Nadia Stafford, a Canadian Lodge owner that caters to people looking for an actual taste of the great outdoors with some extreme sporting thrown in. This is what she does most of the time. Arrange nature hikes, give shooting lessons, skydives. Very occasionally she kills someone.

That's right. Our wholesome nature lodge owner is also a former Police officer turned hitman. And when one of her hits is accidently mistaken for the latest in in a series by a serial killer being called the helter skelter killer (HSK for short) she's in big trouble-until an old sort of friend stops by. Jack is Nadia's mentor and he has a proposition- going under the impression that the HSK is a former hit man he has backing to put a team together to take him out- before it gets too hot for anyone in the profession to operate. And Nadia makes the cut for the team.

Working with hit men isn't easy though, even if they're working together. Everyone is holding something tight to the vest and they're all playing games. But as the hunt gets more and more dangerous it becomes clear that games are only going to get them killed.

This series really isn't that different from the "women of the Otherworld." Yes- there is no supernatural element. And I do believe this is the first Kelley Armstrong novel to have no romantic element play an important role. But the flavor is the same, the writing feels the same. The story is very different but overall this book can be enjoyed with a feeling of comfortable familiarity (in fact, almost disappointing simplicity.)

I have to be honest. While I enjoyed reading this I'm starting to get a very repetitious feeling from Armstrong's novels- It's nothing bad- but it can be tedious and it's very much there.

Four stars.
Ms. Armstrong is such a good writer that I didn't realize that the story is absolutely ridiculous until about a third of the way through the book. A former cop turning hit woman is very unlikely, but it isn't so outlandish that it stopped me from reading the book. It's the main plot line that is so bizarre that it really spoiled the book for me. I had to put the book aside for a week and was reluctant to pick it up again. I did manage to finish it though. Another thing that bothered me was the clumsy way man-woman relationships were shoehorned into the plot.

If you enjoy strong female characters and can ignore a ridiculous plot, you might enjoy this book.
